Do you want to know how your data is processed within the framework of free-flow tolling? What protection measures are applied, and who has access to it? Find here the terms, legal obligations, and user rights.

In case of non-payment: how is your data processed?

When you drive on a toll highway with free-flowing traffic, the system detects your vehicle and license plate. If the toll is not paid within 72 hours, we can issue a ticket. In this case, we are authorized to consult the Vehicle Registration System (SIV) of the Ministry of the Interior to identify the registered owner (name, surname, address) and send a payment notice corresponding to the toll amount plus a fixed penalty.

Why this data?

  • To legally establish the payment notice (identity + address).
  • To ensure that the implementation of the system complies with legal obligations regarding the recording of offenses.

How long is personal data kept for?

Personal data is retained only for as long as necessary for each processing activity that led to its collection (calculating the toll amount, paying and collecting tolls, managing customer relations, etc.) in accordance with applicable regulations.
For example, when an infraction is detected, data may be retained for evidentiary purposes for a period not exceeding the statutory limitation period or, where applicable, the duration of the legal proceedings.

What control do you have over your data? What are your rights and possible actions?

You can take several actions to maintain control of your data:

  • Modify your information (license plate, bank details) via your Sanef customer account,
  • Cancel all or part of the services or close your customer account yourself,
  • Exercise your rights (access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, objection, data portability) by contacting the Data Protection Officer.

What protection measures and safeguards are in place for your personal data?

We comply with the provisions of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and the French Data Protection Act (Loi Informatique et Libertés) regarding the collection, processing, and security of personal data.

Among the safeguards implemented:

  • Access to data is limited to authorized personnel only (employees, subcontractors) within the scope of their duties.
  • Manual image review: to ensure that the identified license plate corresponds to the vehicle in use and that the pricing is correct.
  • Strict adherence to the prohibition against selling, transferring, or disclosing data to unauthorized third parties.
  • Transmission only if required by law (e.g., court order, law enforcement, tax authorities, customs).

These measures ensure that your data is not used for commercial purposes or transferred to anyone without a legal basis.

In the photos taken by the cameras at the free-flow toll plazas: is it possible to see faces and identify passengers?

The cameras are positioned so that the viewing angle and image resolution allow, in particular, for operational purposes:

  • to read vehicle license plates,
  • to detect the possible presence of an electronic toll tag on the windshield, especially in the event of customer complaints following the non-detection of the electronic toll tag on the windshield. These complaints require a visual verification of the presence or absence of the electronic toll tag on the windshield.

What personal data is collected in connection with the payment of free-flow tolls?

Only the data strictly necessary for free-flow tolling is collected.

They mainly concern:

  • The vehicle (photo of the vehicle and front and rear license plates, vehicle category)
  • The passage (date and time of passage, location of passage, position on the road and direction of travel)
  • The bank details for paying the toll online at sanef.com

The new feature compared to a "toll" The "classic" method involves the systematic collection of license plates, which are unique numbers used to identify a vehicle. This is therefore essential for linking a toll payment to a specific vehicle.

What is the purpose of the personal data collected within the framework of free-flow tolling?

The data collected and processed is used solely for free-flow tolling.

It is primarily used to calculate the toll amount (time stamp, license plate photo), to process toll payments and collections (credit card number, payment confirmation), and to manage customer relations.

What data is collected when I log in to the sanef.com website to pay the toll in free-flow mode?

  • Payment on sanef.com after each trip: data relating to the vehicle, the passage, and the payment method,
