At the Boulay free-flow toll plaza (A4 exit no. 36): how does it work and how do you pay the toll? We tell you everything here!
What is the free-flow toll system in Boulay and how does it work?
The Boulay site is an area characterized by heavy commuter traffic. Indeed, in the morning rush hour and in the evening return home, the section experienced slowdowns due to a large volume of vehicles within a limited timeframe.
Based on this observation, the Sanef group chose the Boulay toll plaza to implement a free-flow toll system that addresses the specific traffic patterns of this site and has put an end to the recurring slowdowns. Ultimately, this means fewer traffic jams, less stress, and less CO2 emitted with each passage!
How does the Boulay toll system actually work?
You're driving along, and without slowing down, the gantry detects your license plate or your Liber-t electronic toll tag (affixed to the windshield to the right of the rearview mirror). With free-flow tolling: forget about stopping at the toll plaza and hesitating about which lane to use to pay. You drive with complete ease.
How to pay the free-flow toll at Boulay (exit n°36) on the A4 motorway?
Without barriers, traveling on free-flowing highways is simpler and faster: and so is paying! Depending on how often you travel and your preferences, you have several options:
Immediate payment with the Liber-t electronic toll tag
- Valid on all French highways, as well as in Spain and some parking lots, this is the simplest and most convenient way to fully enjoy the benefits of barrier-free tolling. Your Liber-t tag is detected each time you pass through, and the payment is automatically debited the following month.

Deferred payment after passage

- On the online payment website,
- At the payment terminal located in the parking lot, after the Boulay toll gantry (no. 36) where you can pay in cash.
- After 72 hours, I receive a reminder by mail if it's the first time; otherwise, I receive a payment notice with a surcharge.
- To travel with peace of mind and not miss the 72-hour deadline, sign up for the pending payment alert: you will automatically receive an email each time your vehicle is detected by a toll gantry to remind you to pay the toll within 72 hours of your first passage.
